Wendy is a designer, illustrator and animator who works in bayside Melbourne and lives in her Wendy-house by the sea with her doodle-dog, 2 kids and patient husband. She loves to write, draw, eat chocolate and play CATAN.
THE CURATOR began as a two-page application to an animation course at RMIT but evolved into a longer story and after a $20k Creative Victoria grant, was developed as a graphic novel. As soon as PERENTIE saw the opening pages of this gripping adventure, we knew it was something special.
From Wendy …
Though I’ve always been a fan of graphic novels and comic books—and have studied both animation and illustration, I had never created a graphic novel. Thanks to my background in animation and film, I’d learned how to visualise stories using frames (close-ups, medium shots, long shots, etc.), so I assumed the transition would be easy.
It wasn’t. But it was exciting. I’ve learned about the power of the page-turn panel in the bottom right corner, how to set up a gag, and that you don’t need to cram every detail into every frame. And I’m still learning.
Eventually, I connected with the incredible editors at Perentie Press, Bethany Loveridge and Rochelle Stephens. With their decades of experience and wholehearted support, it truly feels like I’ve won the creative lottery.
With THE CURATOR, I wanted to capture that magical, slightly surreal feeling I get when wandering through galleries and museums. I also wanted to write something with puzzles, secrets, and unexpected turns—where art isn’t just beautiful, but powerful.
