NATASHIA CURTIN
A Kidlit legend who needs no introduction, say hello to Natashia Curtin (—> @natashiacurtin)!
Let’s introduce her anyway. Natashia (pronounced ‘Nah-tar-sha’, thanks to a linguist father), grew up in a remote Yolngu community in Arnhem Land, NT, before finishing high school in Papua New Guinea, and then studying graphic design in Melbourne. As a kid, Natashia obsessively read Asterix and Obelix. She enjoys illustrating, writing things that make people laugh, coaching basketball, boogie-boarding, and reading fantasy novels. Like all clever people, Natashia avoids housework whenever possible.
And what does Natashia love about graphic novels? Here’s what she said: I adore the interweaving of text and illustration. You can say so much non-verbally, and evoke strong emotional responses with choices of illustration style, colour and layout. Plus, artwork in graphic novels is often so beautiful. I can still remember spending hours just looking at Uderzo’s background drawings of waves on the sea or the trees in the forest whilst Asterix and Obelix were busy thumping the luckless Romans!
We love Natashia’s answer, those two violent Gauls, AND what Natashia is cooking up for PERENTIE. It’s going to be a screaming good time!
