WHY GRAPHIC NOVELS?
Graphic novels belong on our bookshelves. They captivate and engage our whole brains. They help us learn to decode the text and images we're bombarded by every day. Even better, they're fun, entertaining and make us feel big feelings.
Reading graphic novels is real reading.
At PERENTIE PRESS, we love words and art. We are passionate about crafting visual stories that are hopeful, that unleash imagination, inspire conversation, and that are read, over and over again.
WHO ARE PERENTIE PRESS?
PERENTIE PRESS was founded by Bethany Loveridge and Rochelle Stephens in 2025.
Bethany is a film, TV, media and visual art teacher with a keen eye for storyboarding and stop-motion animation, and a big love of graphic novels. She is a passionate advocate of the arts, has served on national judging panels and executive committees, and written many articles, learning resources and curriculum materials. As an emerging author, Bethany won several awards and mentorship opportunities which led to her debut middle fiction, Harper Wells: Renegade Timeline Officer.
Rochelle is passionate about books. She runs publishing house Wombat Books and has a growing list of her own titles, including her Riz Chester junior fiction series. Having over 16 years in publishing and a Masters in Editing and Publishing, Rochelle is keen to keep seeing original Australian stories in all formats. Through Wombat Books Rochelle has worked with novels and picture books and seen the growth in graphic novels.
While graphic novels have always been a challenging area in Australia, when Bethany and Rochelle started to brainstorm new ideas, PERENTIE PRESS was born. Our Perentie is quite young at the moment, but the list we have prepared is certainly something to look forward to!
AND LASTLY, WHAT IS A PERENTIE?
Perenties are Australia's largest lizard, and in the top five biggest lizards in the world. The apex predators are endemic to Australia, have a top speed of 40kph, stand on their hind-legs to 'monitor' the horizon for danger, are covered in bright spots, have a long whip-like tail, a flicky forked tongue ... are you picking up what we're putting down? They're sharp, they're beautiful, and they're totally awesome. We love animals, but literally nothing beats a perentie.
